United Way 2011 Economic Pulse

The United Way of Greater St. Louis released a look at our region’s health and human services landscape. The 2011 Economic Pulse is a snapshot of what’s going in our region and how United Way plays a role in our community’s outlook.

Highlights include:

Food insecurity
Food insecurity is limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways (Source: USDA).

In 2010, 155,680 people or 15.6% of people in the St. Louis region were food insecure, with 53% or 82,510 individuals who were ineligible for government food assistance due to their income (Source: USDA).

In January 2011, the unemployment rate for the St. Louis metropolitan area returned to 10% (over 143,000 unemployed) for the first time since June 2010. In February 2011, the rate returned to 9.9% (141,300 unemployed). The March 2011 unemployment declined to 9.3% (over 134,000 unemployed residents of the St. Louis region) (Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Programs for elderly
Since the recession began, Missouri and Illinois have cut medical, rehabilitative, home care, or other services needed by low-income elderly or those with disabilities, or are significantly increasing the cost of these services.
