Spirit of St. Louis Women's FundIn 2012, the Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund (SOS) achieves a milestone of granting over $1 million in charitable funding with over 75 grants to more than 45 not-for-profit agencies in its first six years. Founded in 2006, SOS brings together women who collectively leverage their time, talent and money to strengthen the St. Louis community by making informed and focused grants.

The Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund, a component fund of The Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation, boasts over 220 members. Each member commits to an annual contribution of $1200, with 90 percent of all member contributions used to make grants to St. Louis area nonprofit organizations.

SOS focuses its grantmaking in five primary areas: arts and culture, education, environment, health, and social services. Through a steady increase in membership and grant dollars, SOS continues to provide financial support to a growing base of carefully vetted organizations that its members believe best meet community needs in accordance with SOS guidelines. Exploring the Economic Impact of Early Childhood Education in the St. Louis Community

Spirit of St. Louis Women's FundThe Spirit of St. Louis Women’s Fund (SOS) put together a GREAT program last night for their Discovering Our Community Event 2012.  The focus of the program was early childhood education and the audience got the opportunity to hear from a distinguished panel of experts in this subject area.

These speakers shared information about the history of early childhood education in Missouri, evidence of how early childhood education results in better test scores later in life, statistics about how investments in early childhood education are a long term investment in the local workforce, and how local CEO’s can advocate for early childhood education funding with our state legislators. St. Louis Giving News- Summer 2011

St. Louis area foundations are charitable year-round and the past few months have been no exception.  Below are some highlights of the major gifts that were made this summer in the St. Louis region.


Spirit of St. Louis (SOS) Women’s Fund Awards $209,500 in Charitable Grants to 13 St. Louis Area Nonprofit Organizations

National grant-making trends detailed in the Foundation Growth and Giving Estimates, Current Outlook report from the Foundation Center (issued April 2011) show charitable foundation giving in the United States was stagnant between 2009 and 2010.  Yet for the fifth consecutive year, coinciding with its fifth anniversary, the Spirit of St. Louis (SOS) Women’s Fund has increased annual giving to the St. Louis community.

SOS recently awarded grants totaling $209,500 to 13 nonprofits, a 4.75 percent increase over 2010 grant awards.  Since its founding in 2006, SOS has awarded $909,500 in 64 grants to support 41 grassroots nonprofits across metro St. Louis.  Grants were presented at a ceremony held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of SOS on June 2, 2011 at which Deborah Godwin, associate director of the St. Louis Community College (STLCC) Foundation, served as keynote speaker.  Since 1999, the STLCC Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to more than 8,000 students.
