From the date of notification on August 4th, the highest-ranking applicants for the US Department of Education’s i3 grants had less than five weeks to secure the 20% private sector matching funds. For Parents as Teachers the matching amount was $2.9 million. Only after confirming the matching funds would Parents as Teachers receive the $14.25 million from the Department of Education.
Just 24 hours before the deadline, Parents as Teachers was still short of the goal. In a herculean effort, our partners at Enterprise worked nearly non-stop to put together a pledge to put us over the top and receive the i3 grant. Literally, Enterprise staff worked weekends and over Labor Day to help us achieve our match. It was an exceptionally creative example of corporate philanthropy.
The outcome is that thousands of American Indian families will receive Parents as Teachers services. The funds will serve families in six states living on reservations over a five-year period. And we will reach them thanks to Enterprise!
Part of Enterprise’s mission is “to serve our communities as a committed corporate citizen.” Parents as Teachers can attest to their success as a grand corporate citizen!
